In the shadows of the Ukraine/Russia war and Israel’s fight against Hamas, many are unaware of the plight of the Burmese people.
Since February of 2021, the civil war in Myanmar has fractured the country, leading to over a dozen armed rebel groups fighting to secure land and valuable natural resources. In all, there are 135 different ethnic groups fighting for power. This fighting has torn families apart – with young people being unwillingly drafted into the military to fight relatives who are leading the resistance with rebel groups. So much political turmoil has left families caught in the middle of a crisis they had no part in creating.
Every province in Myanmar is experiencing the war differently. In some areas, household supplies, food, and medicine can become scarce or unavailable without notice. In other areas, church services are being shut down and not able to be reopened until a bribe is paid to the rebel groups in charge.
Pastor James, who uses our ABC program to train his people, opened up his church to seven Buddhist families who fled a war zone. Four of these families have already come to Christ!
Although James pastors in southern Myanmar, he was born in the Chin state on the border of India. His son recently traveled there and saw thousands of internally displaced people (IDP). Pastor James saw a need for a church for these IDPs and has already started a church for Christians in that area. Now, hundreds of Christians from different denominations are worshiping together!
Right now we are working with Pastor James to help reach the thousands of IDPs in this area with the Gospel by providing food and other daily necessities. In the midst of this civil war, our team has continued to secure food and supplies to bring relief and share the message of Jesus. As always, what the enemy meant for bad God will turn for good!
Just a few weeks ago, another pastor who uses our ABC Bible training, communicated with us that he is hiding in his church along with members from his congregation as well as other Christians in their community as their city erupts with fighting.
The roads and bridges in their town have been destroyed, stopping them from being able to flee to safer areas. As a result, it’s very difficult to get food and other resources like gasoline and medicine. We were able to get some resources to them and are working to do more.
My eyes have been opened to how God has positioned World Compassion to respond through the network of churches who we know because of our ABC Bible training course.
This is exciting to me – not that we wanted this situation to happen but that we have a network of churches and hundreds of students who have used our ABC Bible training material that we can now empower to serve people in need! Our ABC students get to take what they have learned and go practice it!
It’s through the consistent giving of people like you that this is even possible. This network of churches is giving us the ability to reach deep into war-torn areas of Myanmar to meet the needs of the people and share the Gospel!
It’s like the story of the good Samaritan in Luke 10. Many families in Myanmar have lost loved ones, have had to move from their homes, are emotionally beaten up, robbed of peace and opportunity. Yet, God’s looking for His Church, you and me, to take notice and do whatever it takes, like the good Samaritan to restore them.
The ABC Discipleship and Leadership Training is over 280 lessons of systematic and comprehensive Bible teaching. This material is provided to local churches in target countries to train their people through their local church and mobilize them in ministry.
This curriculum is available in both print and audio to reach as many people as possible.
We currently have 2,281 students actively studying ABC in Myanmar.
