Pastor Hazim leads two house churches in Iran with roughly 20 people per location. Every week they gather at the risk of being caught and arrested. Hazim has a heart for evangelism but shared that people in their community are isolated, they do not connect and therefore people struggle with loneliness.
Hazim uses Christmas and Easter packages World Compassion partners help provide to open doors to conversations. Each package also includes a Bible. He said it reminds him of the ministry of Jesus and how he would help people and watch it open the door to their heart. This past Christmas his two churches alone saw 30 people give their lives to Jesus! That is 75% of the size of his two churches!
Before an outreach they pray and ask God to show them what community to go to. Their goal is to start a new church there. People from the church go back to meet with those they reached. Hazim told us, when they see someone who has interest, or “the fire” – they keep going! He said “We keep answering questions about God and the Bible until all questions are answered!”
Once they have a small group identified in the newly reached community they begin pulling people together for online gatherings. They have to do it this way in Iran for the safety of all involved. They are still learning if everyone can be trusted or is someone possibly going to rat them out or even connected to the government in some way.
During these digital gatherings no one turns on their cameras and everyone shows a fake name. They do it even at the risk of the government getting the link somehow. It’s risky business but Hazim stated something that has resonated with our team—“expanding the Kingdom requires both faith and risk.”
When trust has been established this new group will begin meeting face to face together in a new house Church but they do not mix with other house churches just in case someone in the other groups is compromised.
Each church typically can not grow to more than 20 people before they start a new one in an effort to not draw attention to themselves. Ministry and church planting is challenging in Iran compared to most of our experiences.
We hope this helps you better understand the effort, strategy and risk Christians in Iran take every day to reach their nation and grow the church. It’s your giving that empowers them!
Next month we are hosting our annual conference for Iranian pastors like Hazim. Helping to fly 50 of these leaders to a safe location for a week of rest, teaching, prayer, worship, strategizing and connection. It costs roughly $1,500 ($2,161 CAD or £1,182) to sponsor a pastor to attend one of our conferences. Your gift towards one of these pastors helps provide them a week outside the pressures they live in daily.
“My family was forced to flee our home last January due to war.
Our village was no longer safe—bombings, fighting, and fear ruled our lives. The local school shut down because teachers were too afraid to stay. Many of our neighbors fled, fearing arrest or worse by the military.
Seeking safety, we moved to Yangon to start over. But we faced a difficult decision—where could we send our children to school? The only available option was a government school run by the same regime that had destroyed our village. That was a painful thought.
Then, we heard incredible news—a Christian school was opening right in our community! We couldn’t believe it. A safe, loving place for our children to learn and grow, right in our neighborhood. God is good!
Thank you for making this school possible for families like ours.”
You and I have an incredible opportunity to meet a significant need while creating powerful ministry opportunities! Our dedicated Christian staff and teachers will spend six hours a day, five days a week, investing in these students—providing a high-quality education alongside impactful Bible lessons. This transformative work will not only shape the lives of these children but also influence their siblings and families for generations to come.
